Everybody Should Know Trademark Law...

The New York Times had an article this week about a Chicago band, Grupo Montéz de Durango, who lost their right to use the band name in Mexico, as their manager had registered it as a trademark there without letting them know. According to the article, some band members spent time in jail for trademark infringement...

The article stresses the importance to understand trademark registration, and goes on explaining simply the process.

Generally speaking, I am often surprised to realize that many people do not know their basic rights, but it is generally criminal procedure-related. Reading this article made me realize that basic intellectual property skills should be taught to all. Why not making it a course in high school and college? Libraries could also offer classes. I have to keep this in mind, it could be a good volunteer opportunity.
